Die konservative Batthyány-Gesellschaft der Professoren will

provide a framework for the activity of university professors who are strongly committed to traditional European social virtues and are willing to act for a better society. The aim of the Society is to give intellectual stimulation to the Hungarian nation thereby contributing to its spiritual and economic development. The Society seeks long-term solutions to current problems. It holds meetings to discuss questions of both national and international interest, to form opinion and to publish its conclusions. Relying on the knowledge, experience and reputation of its members, the Society offers moral and intellectual support to creditable political parties and politicians who work for a „civic“ Hungary.

Legal status: the Society is an independent association, with support from the Batthyány Foundation.

Membership: Hungarian university professors and scientific researchers of comparable rank (e.g., DSc granted by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences), working in the country or abroad.

Sehr geehrte Professorenkollegen,

schon allein deshalb dürfen wir (auch) in dieser Angelegenheit nicht schweigen, weil der Feind alle Hebel in Bewegung setzt. (Nicht die andere Seite, sondern der Feind, der Todfeind der Nation! Gerade sind von Agnes Heller und ihrem Kreis mobilisierte kanadische, US-amerikanische und britische Philosophen dabei, bei den externen Mitgliedern der MTA (Ungarische Akademie der Wissenschaften) für die Unterschrift einer Petition zu agitieren – Leute, die wir, zur größten Schande der MTA, früher zu Ehrenmitgliedern der MTA gewählt haben: Daniel C. Dennett, Robert Evans und Stevan Harnad.

Wenn sich die renommiertesten Mitglieder der ungarischen Intelligenz in dieser Angelegenheit nicht zu Wort melden, wie sollen sich dann diejenigen informieren, die ihr ganzes Leben lang „nur“ dafür geschuftet haben, sich Lebensbedingungen zu schaffen, die ihnen die Voraussetzung für schöpferische Arbeit und selbständiges Denken bieten? Wenn wir uns nicht zu Wort melden, können sie sich nicht über unseren Standpunkt informieren und ihnen bleiben nur die Stimmen von diesem Cohn-Bendit, diesem Martin Schultz, Miklós Haraszti und all derer, die ihnen nachplappern.

Mit Agnes Heller und ihrem Kreis muß man nicht diskutieren. Die muß man einfach ausschließen! Wenn wir diesen Gestalten begegnen, sehen wir ihnen in die Augen, ohne sie zu grüßen, wenn sie sich neben uns setzen, stehen wir vom Stuhl auf, denn ihrer gewerbsmäßigen Haßpropaganda kann man nur noch mit stummer und absoluter Verachtung begegnen.

Das „Volk“ hingegen muß wissen, wie wir über diese Angelegenheit denken.

PS: Auch die immer um Kompromisse bemühte ungarische (die ehrlich magyarisch fühlende) Intelligenz ist verantwortlich dafür, was in diesem gebeutelten Land in den letzten zwanzig Jahren geschehen ist. Die Staatsverschuldung ist von 20 auf 100 Mrd. Dollar gestiegen, kein einziger Geburtsjahrgang der letzten 10 Jahre lag über 100.000 Kindern (zur Selbst-Reproduktion, zur reinen Aufrechterhaltung der jetzigen Bevölkerung müßten es 200.000 sein), 35-40% unserer landwirtschaftlichen Nutzflächen (Anm.: lies „ungarische Erde“) ist durch Korruption bereits in fremder Hand, eine Million der arbeitsfähigen Bevölkerung ist wegen seiner himmelschreienden kulturellen und moralischen Mängel überhaupt nicht arbeitsfähig (Anm.: Damit sind die Roma gemeint), 50 000 Prostituierte „arbeiten“ im Land, und genauso viele im Ausland (das sind 10% der aktiven Bevölkerung!). Der seit 21 (oder 66 (Anm.: Kriegsende), oder 97? (Anm.: Trianon) organisierte, zielgerichtete Genozid an den Magyaren (wörtlich „Vernichtung der Nation“,“nemzetírtás“) ist im Prinzip bereits vollendet worden.

Ich habe die Mail aus verläßlicher Quelle bekommen, sie kursiert derzeit im Internet und wurde auch auf Facebook gepostet, unter anderem hier.

Der Absender, László Hornok, Vizerektor der Szent István Universität in Gödöllô, ist Agraringenieur, Mikrobiologe und Pflanzenpathologe (wiki). Er ist ordentliches Mitglied der Ungarischen Akademie der Wissenschaften (MTA), außerdem leitet er eine akademische Forschungsgruppe an der Universität. Als sein Fachgebiet werden „mikroskopische Pilze“ angegeben (MTA).

Als Hintergrund ist noch von Interesse, daß die MTA letztes Jahr ein Disziplinarverfahren gegen ihn eingeleitet hat, weil er in einem halböffentlichen Brief gegen einen Kollegen polemisiert hatte, der für einen Posten als Staatssekretär vorgeschlagen war (Agrarmonitor.hu).

Inwieweit Hornoks Ansichten für die Batthyány-Gesellschaft repräsentativ sind, kann ich nicht sagen; allerdings hat sich ein anderes Mitglied dieser Gesellschaft die Tage sehr korrekt und konstruktiv zu den Philosophenprozessen geäußert. Der Literaturwissenschaftler Ernô Kulcsár-Szabó , ein bekennender Konservativer, sprach sich im linksliberalen Klubrádió unter anderem für eine gemeinsame Stellungnahme oder Initiative der Geisteswissenschaftler aus, weil diese Sache den Geisteswissenschaften im Allgemeinen schade (das Interview beginnt etwa bei 20.00).

Dear Professor Palinkas,

It is impossible for scholars and scientists living in the rest of the world to be unaware of the very worrisome developments taking place in Hungary today. There is dismay about the curbs on press freedoms, but the latest steps have struck home in the Academy.

Every funded scholar and scientist in the world knows that research grants are provided to support the conduct of research and the communication of its results through conferences, student support and publications.

We also know that even in the wealthiest nations, research is lamentably underfunded, especially in today’s difficult financial times. We all know, too, that every funded researcher in the world is vulnerable to superficial and unsupported charges — by laymen who do not understand or perhaps do not even believe in scholarly and scientific research — to the effect that public money is being wasted on research that is not worth conducting and not worth disseminating.

This is why research funding is accorded on the basis of peer review, by qualified scholars and scientists, and not on the basis of opinion polls, let alone allegations by every sceptic, cynic, or worse.

Most important of all, whenever a baseless attack on publicly funded research happens to appear in the media — assuming that the attack is not so vicious or personal as to be libellous or defamatory — it is ignored and tolerated as one of the inevitable, if not always admirable, manifestations of freedom of the press and freedom of opinion.

In particular, the worldwide scientific and scholarly community knows well that the occasional public venting, especially in hard economic times, of an individual’s animus against research spending in general, or against a particular line of research that the critic happens to dislike, is to be expected in a Gaussian distribution of opinion, freely expressible in public.

If necessary (though it is rarely necessary), supporters of research, better informed about its conduct and purpose, including the research community itself, are free to rally in the defence of research and researchers when they fall under the shadow of disinformation.

But in a nation where it is the freedom of the press and freedom of opinion that are themselves falling under a shadow, and where familiar generic criticisms, so general (and superficial, and ludicrous) that they could literally have been made about every single funded researcher on the planet today — unmerited funding, misspent on conducting and communicating unworthy research — are coupled with far more sinister and borderline-libellous allegations — pocketing the research money instead of using it for its intended purpose — the first thing the international scholarly community would expect by way of a response is a rallying of the national scholarly community in defence of the research and researchers thus attacked.

Instead, what we hear is that in Hungary legal action is being contemplated against the researchers that are under attack.

We write to ask that the Hungarian Academy of Sciences take a prompt, prominent and unequivocal public position in support of the research and researchers thus attacked, and against such empty, ad hominem attacks, to which every scholar and scientist in the world is vulnerable, if they are allowed to metastasize unchallenged.

It is noteworthy, in particular, that it is philosophical research — mental work for which it is not laboratory results but conferences, student support and writings themselves that are the product that the research is funded to produce — are particularly vulnerable to diffuse generic attacks on the worth of the research and the integrity of the researchers.

Hence research in philosophy — a formal division of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences — is in especial need of the Academy’s explicit support.

Nor is it irrelevant that philosophers — like journalists — are often thorns in the sides of governments, on account of their critical thinking — critical thinking of which Hungary today seems to stand in greater need than ever in recent times.

A national Academy of Sciences is the first, natural defender of the exercise of critical thinking in research. As external members and honorary members of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences we confidently but urgently await the prompt, prominent and unequivocal statement of the Academy’s public position in support of the research and researchers in question.

It is the principle of assessment through informed peer review — as opposed to public trial by sinister, uninformed and unsupported allegations — that is at stake here, and the stakes are especially high for science and scholarship.

Tisztelt Professzortársak,

Már csak azért sem jó hallgatnunk ebben az ügyben (sem), mert az ellenség minden követ megmozgat. (Nem másik oldal, hanem ellenség, a nemzet halálos ellensége!). Most éppen az MTA külső tagjait agitálják aláírások gyűjtésére a Heller Ágnesék által mozgósított kanadai, egyesült-államokbeli és brit állampolgárságú filozófusok, akiket – az MTA legnagyobb szégyenére – korábban tiszteleti tagoknak választottunk: Daniel C. Dennett, Robert Evans, Stevan Harnad.

Ha a magyar értelmiség legkíválóbb tagjai nem szólalnak meg ebben az ügyben, akkor hogyan tájékozódjanak azok, akik egész életükben „csak“ robotoltak azért, hogy számunkra biztosítsák az alkotó munka és az
önálló gondolkodás feltételeit adó életpályát. Ha mi nem szólunk, akkor nem tudnak a mi álláspontunk szerint tájékozódni, marad nekik a Cohn-Bendit, a Martin Schultz, a Haraszti Miklós és társaik hangja, meg az őket szajkózó hangok.

Heller Ágnesékkel nem kell vitatkozni. Őket csak ki kell közösíteni! Ha találkozunk ezekkel az alakokkal, akkor a szemükbe nézünk, és nem köszönünk nekik, ha mellénk ülnek, akkor felállunk a székről, mert az ő megélhetési gyűlölködésükkel mást nem lehet szembe szegezni, mint a néma és teljes megvetést.

A „népnek“ azonban tudnia kell, miként vélekedünk mi ezekről az ügyekrol.

Húszról 100 milliárd dollárra nőtt az államadósság, az elmúlt 10 évben egyetlen egyszer sem született 100.000 gyerek (az ön-reprodukcióhoz, a szintentartáshoz 200.000 kellene), termőföldjeink 35-40%-a zsebszerződések alapján már idegen kézben van, a munkaképes lakosságból egymillió fő nem-foglalkoztatható égre-kiáltó kultúrális morális-képzettségi hiányosságok miatt, 50-ezer prostituált „dolgozik“ itthon, s ugyanennyi külföldön (ez az „aktívkorú“ népesség 10%-a!). A 21 (vagy 66, vagy 97?) éve folyó szervezett, céltudatos nemzetirtás tulajdonképpen bevégeztetett.

Dear Professors,

The reason why it would be wrong for us to remain silent in this matter (as well) is that the enemy is leaving no stone unturned (not the opposition, but the enemy, the deadly enemy of our nation!)

Right now, Canadian, American and British philosophers mobilized by Ágnes Heller and her associates are agitating for external members of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (HAS) to sign petitions; these philosophers – to the greatest disgrace of HAS – were previously elected as honorary members. They are: Daniel C. Dennett, Robert Evans and Stevan Harnad.

If the most eminent members of the Hungarian intellectual community fail to speak out on this matter, then how will those people – who have spent their lives “merely” slaving away to guarantee us the conditions necessary for a life-career of creative work and independent thinking – be informed about what is happening?

If we do not speak out, then these people will not have the opportunity to hear about our views on the matter; all they will be left with are the voices of Cohn-Bendit, Martin Schultz, Miklós Haraszti and co., as well as the voices of those who ape what they say.

We must not enter into debate with Ágnes Heller and her associates. We must ostracize them! If we meet with any of these figures, then we must look them in the eye, but not greet them; if they sit down beside us, then we must stand up and leave our seats: the only response to their career-driven hatred of others is to oppose it with silence and utter contempt.

The “people”, however, must be made to know what our opinions are in these matters.

PS Members of the Hungarian intelligentsia (i.e. those who share sincerely patriotic Hungarian sentiments) have been complicit in and thus also responible for what has happened to our ill-fated country over the past twenty years: the state budget deficit has grown from twenty to 100 billion dollars; there was not one time in the past ten years when the birth rate reached the 100,000 level (200,000 children would be necessary for self-reproduction or the maintenance of population levels); 35 to 40% of our agricultural lands are in foreign hands thanks to pocket contracts*; one million of those who would otherwise be fit to work are unemployable due their glaring cultural, moral and educational shortcomings; 50,000 prostitutes are “working” in our country, and the same number are working abroad (this constitutes 10% of the working-age population!). Thus, the relentless programme of national cleansing that has been in operation over the past 21 (66, or even 97?) years has more or less reached its ultimate conclusion.

* Translation note: illegal private contractual agreements between foreign land users and domestic land owners that enable the parties involved to sidestep restrictions on land ownership and purchase.
